  • Check you blood sugar daily.

  • Keep your blood sugar under control.

  • Keep your blood pressure under control. (Your blood pressure should be below 135/85.)

  • Check your feet daily for cuts, swelling, redness or blisters.  Call the Diabetes Foundation for a free pamphlet on foot care.

  • Don't Smoke!!!

  • Stay Active!  Find a friend to walk with you for 30 minutes at least three times a week.

  • Get a Hemoglobin AIc test from your health care provider every 3 months if you use insulin/every 6 months if you do not use insulin.

  • Have a dilated eye exam every year from an eye doctor.

  • Have your cholesterol/HDL/LDL and triglycerides checked at least once a year.

  • See your dentist twice a year.  Brush and floss every day.

  • Have a Micro albumin test every year to check kidney function.

  • Get your flu shot every year.  Keep all other immunizations up to date

  • Have a foot exam each year by a health professional
